A very useful tool available in most cameras today is the histogram.

What is a histogram and why should be interested I?

A histogram is a chart with pictures showing areas of brightness in an image (or tonal values) ranging from pure black (left side) pure white, in horizontal (right side), and the number of pixels vertically.

This all sounds very technical, but with a little practice can tell immediately if an image is overexposed or underexposed.

Needless to say, with a digital camera is the option to make an adjustment right away and get a better picture.

There is no such thing as a "perfect" histogram.

Some scenes have a predominance of the dark or light shades of dark tones but light and well balanced typical scene shows that you should expect to see a curve that starts at the bottom left corner then tilted up to a maximum somewhere in the middle and then descend to the right corner.

This indicates a widespread range of tones, or a wide spread of light and darkness.

However, if a histogram shows a curve that starts somewhere in the left side and ends at a point somewhere on the right side, looking as if it had been cut abruptly at both ends then this could indicate under or over exposure.

Conversely, if the curve starts and ends at the shaft bottom, but not necessarily in the corners yet to be a wide range of tones. Overall, highlight detail control tends to be more important than control of shadow detail.

If the histogram is tilted toward the right side then blown out highlights can be present and necessary adjustments can be made to adjust the exposure.

Suffice it to say, if the shadow detail is more important than the opposite happens. In short once you think you know to "read" a histogram will be able almost instantly to assess the quality of exposure that the camera is doing.

This is especially true when the histogram is superimposed on or right next to the image yes, you can find in many cameras, making much more significant figure.

Remember there is no such thing as a histogram of a "good". The histogram shows how it is and leaves you with options to adjust this.

I strongly recommend you take a look at this excellent aid for a better picture. It is the work of seconds to see the histogram at the very moment that shows the image just taken. Soon begin to recognize what is "good" image for you, at that time, and if necessary to adjust the exposure, and try again.
